Six Country Study of Middle Managers

Brief:

HayGroup, a global management consulting firm, wanted to look at motivation and productivity of middle managers and the people they manage.

Motivation is a massive factor in the productiveness of managers and their staff and understanding how motivated employees are, and just what motivates them, is incredibly powerful.

HayGroup wanted to commission research into this subject across multiple geographies and amongst middle managers to create a report that would help them advise their clients in this area.

Solution:

Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 3,000 middle managers in:

  • France
  • Spain
  • UK
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Saudi Arabia

A high proportion of employees stated they are either ‘very engaged’ or ‘engaged’ at work, with 85% of respondents stating this across all countries.

On average middle managers stated they are productive 81% of their working day, and those who work for them are productive 75% of the time.

Salary (51%), job security (45%) and flexibility of working (29%) were defined by respondents as the top three ‘job related’ motivating factors.

Only 54% of respondents agreed that their company provides them with everything they need to do their job well.

Interestingly, the UK is topped only by the Netherlands in the number of companies that measure levels of staff motivation, although there is a level of skepticism as to how useful these methods are as 27% believe these methods don’t actually give senior management an accurate picture of how motivated they actually are.
