The Need

Barclaycard wanted to gain insight into UK spending habits on the high street  in terms of challenges that face both consumers and UK retailers. They wanted to better understand the variety of factors that affect spending on the high street and how payment methods may affect this.

Our Approach

Opinium conducted a series of studies amongst both retailers and consumers. Areas of research, amongst others, included: interviews with market traders on available payment options and their impact, research amongst retailers and consumers on contactless payments,  a study into the impact of ‘serial returners’ and the effect of big shopping days such as Black Friday / Cyber Monday and the Christmas sales.

The Outcome

The insight was used to help inform business strategy as well as used in a series of reports that could position Barclaycard as a thought leader in the sector and champion of consumers and high street retailers.
